The best things to do in Ella
Nine Arches Bridge
Ella's most photographed sight is a concrete railway viaduct curving through the jungle between Ella and Demodara, finished in 1919. It is free to visit, about 20 to 45 minutes' walk from town, and trains are crossing it again since the line through Ella reopened in June 2026. Our Nine Arches Bridge guide has the walking routes, viewpoints and train advice.
Little Adam's Peak
The easiest big view in Ella. The path to the summit, just over 1,100 metres up, winds through a tea estate off the Passara road, and most people are up and back in one to two hours. It is named after Adam's Peak, about 60 km away, because the two look alike. Our Little Adam's Peak guide covers the walk and the name.
Ella Rock
The harder hike, rising to around 1,350 metres for a panorama over the whole valley. Plan on three to five hours there and back depending on where you start. The trail crosses the railway and tea estates and is famously easy to lose, which is why most people go with a guide. Our Ella Rock guide has the routes, and our Ella Rock Hike starts from Kitalella.
Ravana Falls
A waterfall of around 25 metres beside the road down to Wellawaya, about 6 km from town. Sri Lankan tradition links it to the Ramayana: Sita is said to have bathed in its pool. It is at its fullest after rain. More in our Ravana Falls guide.
A working tea factory
Ella is surrounded by tea estates, and a factory visit shows how the leaf picked on the slopes outside becomes Ceylon tea, with a tasting at the end. It is one of the stops on our Heart of Ella tour; the factory tour is $6 per person extra, paid on the day.
Diyaluma Falls
At about 220 metres, Diyaluma is Sri Lanka's second-highest waterfall, an hour to an hour and a half by road from Ella. The real reward is at the top, where a series of natural rock pools sits right above the drop. Our Diyaluma Falls guide tells the legend behind the name, and our Diyaluma Falls Adventure includes the hike up, a swim and a rice and curry lunch.
Mahamevnawa Monastery and the Ravana Cave
For a quieter half day, the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery near Ella is a peaceful working monastery, and the Ravana Cave carries both the stories of the Ramayana and Stone Age remains. Cover your shoulders and knees at the monastery. Our Spiritual Icons tour visits both in about three hours.
Lipton's Seat
A dawn trip for tea lovers: the viewpoint above the Dambatenne estate near Haputale, where Thomas Lipton bought his first Ceylon estate in 1890. Go before about 9am, when the cloud comes in. Our Lipton's Seat guide has the story and the practical details.

How to get to Ella
By train
The hill country railway is one of the great train rides in the world, and Ella is on it. After Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in late 2025, passenger trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla, through Ella, resumed on 20 June 2026. As of October 2026 the section from Kandy to Nanu Oya was still being repaired, with Sri Lanka Railways aiming to reopen it by the end of the year. Until then, a common plan is to get to Nuwara Eliya by road and pick up the train at Nanu Oya, which still gives you the most scenic stretch. Check the latest with Sri Lanka Railways before you travel.
By road
Ella is about 200 km from Colombo, which is typically a six hour drive. From the south coast beaches such as Mirissa, or from Arugam Bay on the east coast, allow around three to four hours. Private drivers and buses run on all of these routes, and buses into Ella stop in the middle of town.
Getting around Ella
The town itself is small enough to walk, and the Nine Arches Bridge and Little Adam's Peak are both within walking distance. For everything else, tuk-tuks wait in town; agree the fare before you set off. A tour with hotel pickup saves you arranging transport for the waterfalls and the further sights.
When to visit Ella
Ella is a year-round destination. December to March is usually the driest and clearest time, which makes it the busiest for hiking and photographs. The rest of the year brings more showers, often short and heavy, and very green hills, and the waterfalls are at their best after rain. Thanks to the altitude, daytime temperatures mostly sit in the low to mid twenties Celsius, and evenings can feel cool, so pack a light layer.
How many days do you need in Ella?
Two or three days is right for most people. A plan that works well:
- Day 1: Heart of Ella, with the Nine Arches Bridge, a tea factory, Little Adam's Peak and Ravana Falls.
- Day 2: an early start on the Ella Rock Hike, then an easy afternoon on the Spiritual Icons tour.
- Day 3: the Diyaluma Falls Adventure, with a swim in the pools at the top.

Questions travellers ask
Where is Ella in Sri Lanka?
Ella is in Badulla District, Uva Province, in the central hill country of Sri Lanka, about 200 km east of Colombo. The town sits at 1,041 metres above sea level and is on the main hill country railway line between Nanu Oya and Badulla.
Is Ella worth visiting?
Yes. Ella packs a lot into a small area: the Nine Arches Bridge, the hikes up Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock, Ravana Falls, tea estates and factories, and Diyaluma Falls a little over an hour away. The cooler climate and relaxed town make it one of the most popular stops in Sri Lanka.
How many days should I spend in Ella?
Two to three days. One day covers the Nine Arches Bridge, a tea factory, Little Adam's Peak and Ravana Falls, for example on the Alpine Activities Heart of Ella tour. A second day suits the Ella Rock hike, and a third day the Diyaluma Falls pools.
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in 2026?
Partly. After Cyclone Ditwah, passenger trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla, through Ella, resumed on 20 June 2026. As of October 2026 the Kandy to Nanu Oya section was still closed for repairs, with reopening targeted for the end of 2026, so most travellers drive to Nuwara Eliya and take the train from Nanu Oya. Check with Sri Lanka Railways before travelling.

All are booked online at alpineactivities.lk.
Is Ella cold?
