What you’ll do
If you are visiting the area, Ella Rock should be on your bucket list. It is one place you get truly dashing panoramic views in Sri Lanka. You can see the mountain from anywhere in Ella: if you spot a rock holding a lone tree proudly on top, that's the one.
Pickup from your hotel
Your guide collects you from your accommodation in Kitalella.
The trail
The hike winds through tea estates, dense forest and rocky paths. It's steep in places, so bring water and sturdy footwear. Your guide sets the pace and knows the route, which is notoriously easy to lose without one.
The summit
Sweeping views over the valleys of Sri Lanka's hill country. Watching the sunrise from Ella Rock is breathtaking and well worth the early start.
Drop off at your hotel
A much-needed activity for adventure seekers and nature lovers, and a lifetime memory.
What to bring and wear
- Proper hiking shoes or trainers with grip; the upper section is steep, rocky and slippery when wet
- At least 1.5 litres of water per person; there is nowhere to buy any on the trail
- A hat, sunscreen and a light rain jacket; the summit is exposed
- Cash in rupees for the viewpoint fee near the top, around 930 rupees per adult
- A small snack or breakfast to eat at the top
- A charged phone or camera for the panorama over the Ella Gap
Please don't
- Do not attempt the trail alone; it is notoriously easy to lose, which is why the guide is included
- Do not walk on the railway line when a train is approaching; your guide will keep you clear
- Do not rush the descent; most slips happen on the way down
- Do not leave litter at the summit
