Ella Rock: How to Hike It, How Long It Takes and What You'll See

Ella Rock is the great rock face across the valley from Ella town. It is the cliff with a single tree standing on top. The summit sits at about 1,350 metres, and from it you look straight down the Ella Gap to the plains in the south. It is the harder of Ella's two classic hikes, a half day through tea estates and forest, and the one people remember.

The routes up

From Ella station

Most people start at Ella station and walk south along the railway towards Kitalella, which takes around 40 minutes. Just before Kitalella station the path leaves the line, crosses the stream below the Kitalella falls and climbs through tea estates and then eucalyptus forest. The last stretch is steep, on rock and roots, before it opens out at the top.

From Kitalella

Starting at Kitalella cuts out the railway walk and saves half an hour or more. This is where our Ella Rock Hike begins: we are based in Kitalella, at Ella Alpine Resort, so the trail starts close to home.

Why people get lost

Ella Rock is famous for it. Dozens of paths cross the tea estates, the markers are faded, and in places the grass grows taller than you. You will probably meet someone offering to show you the right way, and then asking for a tip at the end. None of that is dangerous, but it can turn a three-hour walk into a five-hour one, which is why so many people go with a guide who knows the trail.

What you see from the top

The main viewpoint looks down the Ella Gap, the deep notch in the hills that lets you see right across the southern plains on a clear day, with Little Adam's Peak across the valley. A second viewpoint a short walk away looks over the upper and lower Ravana Falls and the road winding down to Wellawaya.

Sunrise on Ella Rock

For sunrise, you need to leave Ella at about 4am, with a head torch, so you are at the top as the light comes up over the Gap. It is cooler, quieter and well worth the early start. The middle of the day is hot and exposed, so if you are not going for sunrise, start early anyway.

What to bring

  • Proper hiking shoes or trainers with grip
  • At least 1.5 litres of water per person; there is nowhere reliable to buy any on the trail
  • A hat, sunscreen and a light rain jacket; the summit is exposed
  • Long trousers or long socks in the wet months, for the leeches
  • Cash in rupees for the viewpoint fee at the top
  • A snack or breakfast to eat at the top

Staying safe

The walk from Ella follows a working railway. Keep to the side, listen for horns and step well clear before a train reaches you. Take the descent slowly, because most slips happen on the way down, and turn back if heavy rain sets in near the top.

Want an easier walk first? Little Adam's Peak takes an hour or two. For the rest of the area, see our Ella travel guide.
